| This is the gate to the plaza very near to my house, there's always a basketball game going on and kids playing. This is also where we play frisbee! |
On Friday, I was invited to attend Ma'am DaDa's daughter, Katrina's, 18th birthday party-- aka her "Debut". It was a huge affair with a gorgeously set up side yard, complete with stage for the debutante and catered buffet!
This is Ma'am Amy showing off the 18 roses that would be presented to Katrina by 18 of her guy friends. Ma'am Amy is the Home Ec teacher and the roses were made by her students... out of melted, pink, plastic spoons and fake flower petals!! The students melted the spoons with a candle and glued them together. Completely recycled and really impressive!
The side yard all set for the party!
I've come to learn that Filipinos really don't like to be in the rain and as soon as one rain drop fell, this is what happened! Ma'am Grace immediately got out her umbrella and Ma'am Amy covered her head with her handkerchief. It was a funny sight because I think there were a total of 5 raindrops that fell after this scene...
In addition to 18 roses being given to the birthday girl, 18 of her girl friends lit a candle and told her a special message, mostly advice such as "stay gorgeous" and "stay humble".
Katrina on her throne among all the gifts.
After the 18 candles were lit, Katrina was given 18 "treasures" by 18 family members and family friends--me included. After that, a hot air balloon was released and we were unleashed on the buffet! Such good food!
Overall, the party was surprisingly similar to a big American sweet-sixteen style party!
